A brief history of The Catering Crew

How we got started

The Catering Crew started in November 1996 as a direct result of the Changeover Core Group being established at Hilltop RAC (now known as Connections Day Services), Radstock, Somerset, England. A number of the Service Users at the centre were asked if they would like to prepare vegetarian food for this group's regular meetings. Several Service Users accepted the challenge and the Catering Crew was formed. Once established at the centre the group wondered if they could take their new found skills and services out into the community.

Who we are

The Catering Crew produced advertising literature and sent this to the Local Authority Social services Departments in Keynsham and Bath. This proved to be of great interest and a business relationship developed between the Crew and the Social Services Department as the Crew started providing outside catering for their training courses.

How we have grown

The high quality of the food and standard of service soon spread into the wider community and the number of new customers grew. since 1996 the Catering Crew has developed from the initial four Service Users (Mark, Sandra, John and Brenda) into fifteen regular working Crew members, who, for example, in 2010 provided some 2000 buffets to customers in the region. Meals are produced in our specially designed catering facilities and are delivered and served to customers as required.

The Catering Crew was originally supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council's Health & Wellbeing Partnership's Employment Inclusion Section to develop the business and provides two Project Officers, who are employed on a part-time basis. As of 1st October 2011 support for the Catering Crew transferred to the newly formed Community Interest Company called Sirona Care & Health which is now commissioned by Bath & North East Somerset Council to provide Health and Social Care services in the Authorities area. The Crew continues to improve their practical and business skills from menu design to full provision of outside catering services at customers' venues. They participate in control of the business accounting and developing, and each member is paid a session fee for their work with The Catering Crew. The vision of The Catering Crew is to expand the business to suit the developing needs and skills of each Crew member and to continue to provide quality foods and a profitable business. We also seek to become a training establishment for disabled people and other socially disadvantaged people to enable them to seek open market employment. We are now proud to provide a range of vegetarian, traditional and speciality buffet menus to suit all tastes and prices. We can deliver to customers within a 25 mile radius of Radstock, Somerset, England.
